For Step Two, follow the same basic rules as Step One (you’re used to them by now, right?). You can eat all the same foods, and you should feel free to repeat any of the menus and recipes you’ve enjoyed, but there are also some fantastic additions.
Here are additional things you’ll enjoy on this phase of the plan:
1. Expanded approved foods. In the list below, you’ll see all the approved foods, including the Step One foods, and some new ones highlighted in bold type. Continue to have no starch with dinner, and continue to start each dinner with either the LIFE Veggie Soup or LIFE Dinner Salad.
Along with adding specific entries to your list of allowed foods, Step Two also loosens up on sweeteners, frozen dinners, and treats . . . as long as you follow the rules.
2. Sugar substitutes and artificial sweeteners. Moderate amounts of artificial sweetener are now allowed, but certainly not required or suggested. If you want to incorporate sweetener, Step Two allows for no more than a total of two items with artificial sweetener each day. So if you choose to drink a diet beverage, you may also have Splenda in your coffee or a yogurt with aspar- tame or sucralose. As before, all calorie-containing sweeteners are not allowed, including all sugars (white, brown, or raw) and honey, unless spe- cifically noted in your meal plan.
3. Prepared frozen meals. You now have the option to eat a prepared frozen meal for dinner, as long as it contains no more than 350 calories per entrée. Try to select a dinner that is starch-free, and don’t forget to eat a dinner salad or a serving of LIFE Veggie Soup before eating the frozen dinner!
4. LIFE Healthy Extra. In Step Two, you may now enjoy a preapproved treat once each day (any time you’d like). Choose from among the goodies on my approved list.
