Gestational diabetes calls for a very strict diet control. To keep diabetes under control it is important to eat after every two hours. As carbohydrates contribute the most towards raising levels of blood sugar, you must restrict your intake of these.
Breakfast and lunch
You may have a breakfast restricted to about 25 grams each of carbohydrates and protein with 100 ml of milk. This amounts to a cup of milk, a slice of cheese prepared from no fat milk, plus two slices of normal bread. After a gap of two hours, you can have another cup of milk and some fruit, if you feel hungry.
Lunch should comprise of two parts each of carbohydrates and proteins along with one part each of milk and fruit. Practically it implies two wheat tortillas, with one boiled egg or a bowl of lentils.
After the meal you should have a bowl of yogurt or a milkshake. There is no restriction on having as much of raw vegetables as you feel like.
Yet, you should avoid potatoes and corn or other starchy vegetables.
Afternoon tea and dinner
Soon after lunch you should not lie down. Have a short walk around the house only enabling food to go down well in the system. Subsequent to that you must have your afternoon siesta or a short nap in the afternoons.
On getting up you may have a cup of milk or a cup of tea prepared only in milk. You might as well have a piece of a seasonal fruit. For maintaining the right level of carbohydrates, have unsweetened biscuits or a thin sandwich.
After a gap of about two hours you should go for an early dinner. This should be on a similar pattern as your lunch. After another gap of two hours you may have another cup of milk. This should be at least half an hour before you retire for the night. On feeling hungry you may have some smallquantity of fruit.
Develop the habit of eating raw vegetable as salad with each meal.
You have to avoid sugar and sweet meats. Else, opt for those sweets only that are using artificial sweeteners.
You have to plan your diet around two spoonfuls of oil a day, be it in the form of butter or ghee. Keep a regular exercise routine.
